Sumitha* entered a women’s shelter in South India without any vocational skills to speak of. She demonstrated an interest in learning, so the shelter invited her to participate in their tailoring and baking unit programs. Following the initial training period, she showed tremendous improvement in tailoring and began stitching blouses for sale, taking great interest in perfecting the craft. She also joined the baking staff as a helper, but swiftly developed her skills in the kitchen and became an essential member of the team.

Despite her traumatic past and previous lack of experience, Sumitha was given a chance, and has been empowered and equipped to lead an independent, fulfilling life.
